CMOS

CMOS sensors are one of the two main types of image sensors used in digital cameras, the other being CCDs. The term stands for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor, which is a general type of integrated circuit used in thousands of chip varieties. Unlike a CCD, which is essentially an analog image sensor that then transfers its data to be digitized, CMOS sensors have a digital stage built into each individual pixel. When light strikes a pixel, it's detected and converted to a digital signal. These signals can be read in parallel, giving the CMOS a speed advantage over CCD chips, but the extra hardware on the chip's surface needed to read each pixel means they're less sensitive to light.
