CAPTCHA
A CAPTCHA is a form of reverse Turing Test that is designed to determine if the operator of a piece of hardware or software is a human being. Usually the process consists of image or string recognition where the operator must correctly identify the contents of the picture. It is most often used to prevent automated signups to web-based services, like web e-mail or forums, and also prevents automated posting or password cracking.
While CAPTCHAs are necessary to keep robots out, thanks to their image-based nature they also keep screen readers from effectively reading them, preventing blind internet users from accessing certain internet resources. To combat this, some CAPTCHA engines have added audible versions where the letters are spoken, though audio CAPTCHAs are still the exception to the rule.
