Bluetooth

Bluetooth is a wireless connection protocol for connecting various devices over short distances.

Bluetooth is different from other common wireless protocols, such as WiFi, in that it is a short-range wireless connection used for establishing personal area networks, such as connecting a headset to a cellphone, a computer to a printer, or for syncing the data on a cellphone's address book with the address book on a computer. Most Bluetooth devices have a discoverable mode whereby they broadcast their connectivity options so that other nearby Bluetooth devices can detect them and easily be paired with them, thereby creating a personal area network. Unlike a WiFi connection, Bluetooth is not generally used for internet connectivity.

Bluetooth headsets that are wirelessly connected to cellphones are the most common implementation of this technology and sometimes the term is mistakenly used as a synonym for these devices. Bluetooth is simply the wireless protocal via which the headset connects to the cellphone and both the headset and the cellphone must have Bluetooth capability for the connection to work.
