Blu-ray

Blu-ray is a type of physical media optical disc that is primarily used to playback high-definition movies. Blu-ray's initial success in the marketplace is largely due to the fact that it ships as the optical drive of choice for the PS3. Sony, the company largely championing the format, sees Blu-ray as an eventual successor to DVD, though current Blu-ray titles are largely outsold by DVDs.

Blu-ray entered the marketplace in June of 2006 with the technology having been developed as early as 2000. Blu-ray initially faced an early competition with HD-DVD, another high-definition format created by Toshiba. The two formats fought one another till January of 2008, when Paramount Pictures announced it would be abandoning HD-DVD, and instead opting for Blu-ray exclusivity. With that announcement, Toshiba cancelled major HD-DVD presence at the Consumer Electronics Show, and soon after announced it would be suspending sales of HD-DVD players.
