Blu-ray profile 2.0

The Blu-ray optical high definition format specifies three different profiles, each with a different set of required features necessary for a manufacturer to include in a Blu-ray player that will support a specific profile. BD Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live, is the third and most full-featured of all the profiles. Profile 1.0 was available on all Blu-ray player models released before November 1, 2007 and is now deprecated in favor of the new Final Standard Profile, also known as Profile 1.1 or Bonus View. On top of the enhancements added to Profile 1.1, Profile 2.0 includes a set of secondary audio and video decoders, a 1 GB cache of local storage capability, and an internet connection.

With an internet connection and local storage, Profile 2.0 players support downloadable content such as additional extras and special features for movies you've purchased on Blu-ray. Still in its early days, BD-Live interactive content isn't quite an indispensable part of the movie viewing experience just yet, but keep an eye on content innovations here as studios and disc manufacturers increasingly explore the format.

To summarize the requirements of Profile 2.0:

  • 1 GB local storage capability
  • internet connection (Ethernet or WiFi)
  • secondary video decoder
  • secondary audio decoder
  • a virtual file system to accommodate logical access to the local storage area
