black levels
In video, the black level is defined as the level of “brightness” in an image or video at the darkest part of the visual image. Alternatively, black level can be described as the level of brightness at which no light is actually being emitted from a particular screen (i.e. the pure black of that TV or monitor). Black levels typically need to be adjusted for an optimal picture such that black signal from the video or picture matches that which is being shown on the display (one example test pictured below). Lowering black levels makes the grays darker, and lowering the level completely turns the entire image black.
