Bit rate

A bit rate is simply the number of bits conveyed over a set period of time. It is most commonly expressed per second as in kilobits per second (Kbps), megabits per second (Mbps) or gigabits per second (Gbps). Two common examples of bit rates are internet connection speed and digital music files. A typical wireless connection is capable of transferring somewhere around 5 Mbps. MP3 files, depending on the quality, range anywhere from 32 to 320 Kbps. In the realm of video, a webcam transmits about 200 Kbps, while Blu-ray quality video is around 54 Mbps.
