Bandwidth

In most contexts, bandwidth (sometimes also called "data transfer rate") refers to the amount of information that can be transferred from one computer to another over a network or internet connection. Usually this is measured in kilobits, megabits, or gigabits per second. For example, many mid-range cable modem internet connections can transfer data at a rate of 2mbps. Basic DSL might transfer up to 384kbps.

While its colloquial use usually applies to network connections, the term (especially when expressed as "data transfer rate") technically also applies to just about any kind of data transfer — for example, the amount of information that can be sent from your computer's DVD drive and your hard disk drive.
