ATSC

Developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee, ATSC is a standard digital television format that will be replacing the analog NTSC television system in the US by February 17, 2009 and by August 31, 2011 in Canada. ATSC standards define a high definition wide screen 16:9 video transmission system up to 1920 x 1080 pixels in size as well as 5.1-channel surround sound theater quality audio in Dolby Digital AC-3 format. The ATSC system supports a number of different display resolutions, frame rates and aspect ratios including both progressive and interlaced scanning modes.

A variety of other digital terrestrial television broadcasting systems are in use around the world including the DVB-T standard in use in much of Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, India, and elsewhere, ISDB-T in Japan, and China's DMB-T/H.
