Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio of an image is essentially its shape. Movies in theaters, for example, are wider than video on traditional, projection screen televisions. Specifically, a video's aspect ratio can be found by dividing its width by its height. Common aspect ratios for still photography are 4:3 and 3:2. Standard definition video (the kind broadcast on older, cathode ray televisions) generally has a 4:3 aspect ratio while high definition videos use the standard of a 16:9 aspect ratio. Motion picture aspect ratios are denoted differently. The height of the image is recorded as “1” and the remainder is based on that measurement. So, for example, North American screens are generally 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 aspect ratios.
