AMOLED

AMOLED, an acronym for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, is an emerging display technology popular for use in mobile devices, and is slowly moving into larger screen devices. Just as LCD describes the specific technology used in Active Matrix LCD displays, OLED describes a specific type of ultra thin, ultra bright display technology which doesn't require a backlight and AMOLED refers to the technology behind the addressing of pixels. AMOLED screens have four separate layers to control the picture: An anode layer, a middle organic layer, a cathode layer, and a bottom layer which contains circuitry.

AMOLED screens will continue to grow in size, and are expected to eventually take the lead in the flat-panel TV market. Some predictions peg AMOLED adoption to hit its stride by 2011 or 2012.
