Alpha

Alpha is a designation for a stage of software development where the build is subjected to testing by individuals (usually within the community that designed the software). In recent years, alpha testing has been extended to include software testers from value-chain partners and external customers in an effort to decrease the time taken to get a product to the market. Alpha testing usually includes two different phases of tests, sometimes performed concurrently. The first, white box, is an internal phase performed by developers; the second, black box, is completely independent from white box. Following the tests of the alpha build, a beta version is released.
