Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Adobe Flash

Adobe Flash is a standard for viewing and creating animation files, and more recently has become the preeminent standard for video on the web. Many sites, most notably video sharing service YouTube, use Flash's FLV file format to play back movies through the Flash player.

Originally created by Macromedia, who was eventually purchased by Adobe, Flash was initially intended to be a lightweight counterpart to Macromedia Director. Director was created to assist in the creation of interactive CDROMs, kiosks and other content that required animated interactivity. Flash, being a low-complexity counterpart, utilized much smaller file sizes, and as a result became an early web mainstay in the days of dial-up modems.
