Accelerometer

An accelerometer measures the movement of a device on its axis. There are many different uses for accelerometers, from judging the acceleration of cars to determining how an object is being held in relation to the ground.

Accelerometers are becoming more common in smartphones such as the iPhone, and are the primary component of Nintendo Wii remotes. If you tilt one of these devices, and its interface recognizes the movement, the accelerometer is doing its job.
