3G

3G stands for the third generation of mobile phone connections that offer faster, more secure connections than previous generations. 3G cellular networks offer regular wireless telephone connectivity in addition to internet connectivity that is comparable to high-speed broadband connections normally found via a home DSL or cable connection.

The two most popular types of 3G connections in the U.S. are HSDPA, or HIgh Speed Download Packet Access, and EV-DO, or Evolution-Data Optimized.

The specific type of 3G connection available depends upon cellular provider. GSM based providers like T-Mobile and AT&T use HSDPA; CDMA-based carriers like Sprint and Verizon use EV-DO.
