The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was the second home console by Nintendo. Also known as the Super Famicom in Japan and other Southeast Asian territories, the console became of best-selling console of the 16-bit generation of home console gaming. The console was most popular for its 2D titles, but also gained praise for several early 3D games such as F-Zero, Star Fox and Mario Kart. The SNES controller featured the standard directional pad and start and select buttons, as well as 4 face buttions and two shoulder buttons. The console went through several re-designs which made it smaller and more compact, though the original model is still the most widely-used. By the end of its retail lifecycle, the console had sold over 49 million units.
