Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer (3DO for short) was something of a do-it-all project on behalf of Panasonic. The unit was meant to be an all-encompassing entertainment device that would combine the best parts of a VCR, TV, computer, and video game system. Unfortunately, the console's marketing and overall support fell well short of what was needed. Although many electronics giants pursued rights to manufacture their own 3DO-capable units, none of the device's capabilities were well utilized by any of them.

As a video game system, the 3DO was capable of 3D graphics, and relatively advanced processing abilities. The 3DO used disc-based media as its format for games and it was capable of CD-quality sound effects as well as high-resolution (at the time) video output. The system even gave birth to some high-profile game series such as Road Rash. However, in the end the unit's rather confusing combination of supported formats, as well as its $700 price tag, doomed it to obscurity. Less than three years after its release, the 3DO was cancelled and all future titles were tossed.
