Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

With PMA going down in just a few weeks, it was a slow week for camera and camcorder announcements. This week we did manage to get pricing for all those camcorders Canon announced last month at CES, and Dell put it's new ZINK printer on the market.

Photography in the News:

  • The Pentagon has reportedly had a 1.8-gigapixel camera built to go on its Hummingbird robot helicopter. The camera is composed for four arrays that each contain 92 five-megapixel sensors and can cover an area of over a hundred square miles (there's a wide angle lens!). The Hummingbird is designed primarily to be a surveillance helicopter, and has the ability to hover at 15,000 feet for over 20 hours before it has to land. The high-resolution camera will enable the helicopter to track moving vehicles, and take exceptionally detailed shots of the action going on below.
  • Curious on how 3D movies work? Our own Galen Burke wrote a pretty awesome look at how 3D movies are made, and what we can expect from the future of 3D.

Firmware Updates:

  • Canon released a firmware update for the Powershot G10. The update fixes the exceptionally rare problem where "if RAW images are captured by continuous shooting under the ISO 1600 setting, abnormal data is recorded and a magenta cast appears in the second and subsequent RAW images. This phenomenon also occurs in the second and subsequent recorded RAW images captured by single shooting, but only if the LCD monitor display mode is set to the OFF position."
  • Panasonic released a firmware update for the Lumix DMC-G1. The update is expected to improve the performance of the camera's Auto White Balance as well as color reproduction, and improve the operation of the built-in flash in lower temperatures.

The Nikkor AF-S f/1.8 Prime lens is something I have been waiting for. It's actually affordable.
