We've talked about a few select apps from the iPhone app store, including Cooliris and Fring, but now we're going to break down some of our favorite recommended apps we've found in the application store to date. We'll try to do this once every few weeks to help iPhone and iPod touch owners find fun new applications to try on the go. Read on for our first edition.
All the titles are linked to their locations on the iTunes store, so you can download them directly.

10. Fring — Lets users make and receive calls over Skype and SIP, and also connects to other major instant messaging networks like AIM, MSN and Yahoo. We liked its ability to turn an iPod touch into a VoIP phone.

9. Cooliris — Essentially a media discovery application, Cooliris points media found around the web to a user through a very interesting and unique 3d interface. See Barb's full review for more.

8. Pandora - The most frequently used iPhone application, Pandora allows users access to a radio station that learns exactly what each user likes and suggests more music to be played. Apple's new "Genius" feature applies the same concept to a local library.

7. Last.FM - Similar to Pandora, except Last.FM emphasizes social features and will keep track of songs played on the desktop version of iTunes. Last.fm also has social features that help a user find concert dates and other music-related social network features.

6. Spore Origins - One of our favorite picks for games on the iPhone, this game takes the cell stage from The Sims creator Will Wright's magnum opus desktop game Spore and miniaturizes it for the iPhone. Most noted for the control scheme which uses the accelerometer to control the player's tiny creature, this tiny game has some big replay value.

5. Tap Tap Revenge - Rather than try to take some sort of musical-instrument-turned-game-controller on the road, practice up your music game skills with Tap Tap Revenge. Though the game doesn't have many big names, with Daft Punk and Justice being the exception (as well as a special Nine Inch Nails edition), the game has enough appeal to kill a subway commute effectively.

4. Fake-a-call - Potentially one of our favorite apps in the app store, Fake-A-Call does exactly what it sounds like: Fakes a call. Simply set the countdown and the phone will start vibrating and/or ringing when the timer goes out. Also, iPod touch owners can pretend to be an iPhone owner, as the app works just as well there as it does on the real iPhone.

3. Remote - Instead of simply letting the iPhone and iPod touch be used as a local music player, Remote enables iPod touch and iPhone users to control a computer's iTunes library in a Sonos-esque manner. We're big fans of the Remote app; one favorite use is as a widget of sorts to display the album artwork from the currently playing song.

2. Beatmaker - It might cost $20, but Beatmaker is a fully featured sequencer application. Music aficionados who come up with ideas for beats on the go can lay them down on the small screen, then transfer the mixes to a regular computer and further manipulate them. Beatmaker is an extremely impressive app for music makers and tinkerers. One of our favorites.

1. Airsharing - Airsharing is one of those apps that'll make you drop your jaw in amazement. Rather than struggle with enabling "disk mode" or otherwise having to rig an iPod or iPhone to accept files, Airsharing lets users connect and transfer files over WiFi just like any other networked computer. Extremely useful and versatile.
Got an app we missed? We're just scratching the surface of the thousands of apps available. Sound off and let us know your favorites. We'll be back with more installments of this series, so let us know your picks.

I'd add FourTrack to this list. It's the best audio-recording app for the iPhone to date and best of all it can record up to 4 unlimited length tracks and exports to your computer over WiFi.
