Are you ready for some football? Probably not if you're planning to watch this weekend's game on a small TV. Trying to watch the Super Bowl on a tiny television is the equivalent of sitting in the last row of Raymond James Stadium, with the Goodyear Blimp buzzing inches from your head. In other words, it may be kind of cool to be part of the experience, but you should plan to miss a lot of the best action.
According to the National Retail Federation, 167 million adults will tune into the Super Bowl this Sunday. Sadly, many of them probably won't watch on a decent-sized TV. Over 9.6 million must agree, because the NRF says that's about the number of people that plan to buy a TV before Sunday's kick off. Unfortunately, there aren't too many deals to be had before the big game. Need a game plan? We took a quick peek and found a few big screens that don't call for a big budget.
Those wanting to kick off the game with new gear in-house can pick up Vizio's 37-inch HDTV from their local Sears store. Vizio may be a lower-priced model, but it's HD and it's a mere $550. Do a quickie web search and you'll find hundreds of happy customers with the same model, which includes a 1366 x 768 resolution, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a 178-degree viewing angle.
Walmart is making its Super Bowl sale bigger than most — at least in inventory. For some, a few bucks off might not be anything to cheer about, but it could be just enough to justify a first (or second) purchase, especially on some of the store's lower-priced models. Some of the notable deals include a 32-inch Samsung for $498 and a 46-inch Sony for $1,298. The latter also comes with a $100 Walmart gift card, which you can put back into your tech budget, spend on chips and dips, extra loose pants, or any other gear for the game.

As long as you are in Walmart, scoop up the Audiovox 7-inch drop-down LCD for the kitchen. It's got a built-in DVD player, making it perfect for whipping up snacks during that half-time "spectacular." It may not be the big screen that you need, but should do in a pinch for guests planning to hover around the kitchen, or for you when you spend the second half eating dip with your hands over the sink.
If you order something from NewEgg, it probably won't make it in time for the first fumble. However, they have a nice deal on Panasonic's 50-inch TH50PZ80U for $1,349.99. The 1080p TV has a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, an SD card slot, and plenty of hookups, including three for HDMI devices; check out the full specs here. The set is also available for $20 more at a place called PC Connection. However, it won't get to you any quicker, and NewEgg throws in free shipping, making for a total of $200 in savings. As long as you don't expect it in time for the big game, you'll still get plenty of drool-worthy sporting experiences in years to come.
Amazon also has the very nice Samsung 40-inch LN40A650. At last look, the set was $1,108.83. Amazon usually sells it for $1,699, and the cheapest we found it elsewhere was $300 more. That's a decent savings and price for a 1080p set with four HDMI inputs, 120 Hz Auto Motion Plus, and a squeak of red color to accent its bezel (full specs available here).
One last deal worth waiting for is B&H's Sharp AQUOS combo. The 52-inch AQUOS LC-52D65U is selling for $1,495. It’s not a bad price considering the 1080p unit has five HDMI inputs, a 2,000:1 native contrast ratio, (10,000:1 dynamic contrast), a 4-millisecond response time, and a 176-degree viewing angle (see the full specs). However, they kick in a little bonus Blu-ray player, which makes the deal a definite winner.
One of the worst deals we found was at Amazon and Best Buy. Both are pushing Samsung, because they are "official" TV of the Super Bowl. Apparently, that means they don't need to offer a good deal. Those with $1,000 to burn can certainly score a nice Samsung TV. However, don't expect a price break; instead, you'll get $200 in NFLShop.com certificates. We're not doing a victory dance over that one.
Deals were definitely more prominent (and promoted) around the holidays. However, don't expect the same scary crowds either — those should be fighting over the last chicken wings at your local supermarket. Of course, not everyone watches the big game, either. Those few should snag Amazon's deal on season one of "Mad Men." It's the cheapest we've seen, at $24.
