There are thousands of products on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas every year — some of them practical, some not so much. When we took a look at Lenovo's ThinkPad W700ds laptop last night, we had some trouble deciding which of those two categories it falls into. Its claim to fame is a retractable secondary display that juts out of the right side of the lid. So in addition to the 1,920 x 1,200 pixels on the main, 17-inch display, you also get 1,280 x 768 in an additional 10.6 inches. More about the laptop after the break.

When we retracted the display, Windows automatically detected the change, albeit with a quick flash on the main screen. The laptop also had a pen-based digitizer, a finger print reader, and a full numeric keyboard. As you can imagine, it was huge. It was one of the bulkiest and heaviest laptops we'd ever used, and that's why we wonder about its practicality. Sure, it's a full-service workstation for visual artistry, on par with dual-display desktop solutions. But it's so large and heavy, we can't imagine carrying it around for more than a few minutes.
The target market for this model is small: creative professionals (or serious amateurs) who want a laptop with all the perks of a desktop workstation. If that's you — and if you have $3,600 to spend (or your boss does) — you'll want to add it to your own personal watch list. We felt like it was the closest we'd seen to the desktop workstation experience in a laptop, but it's so large and heavy (and kind of ugly, too) you won't be carrying it around any conferences. You might be comfortable hauling it back and forth between the office and your house, though.
