Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

We gave you a list of items that can be purchased on the cheap, but where can you go to get the best deals? Fortunately for you, we've compiled a list of our favorite places to get deals on tech items. We'd like to note that none of these companies have contacted us, provided us with merchandise or money in exchange for our recommendation. These are companies we've worked with in the past who have left a good impression on some of the editors of Obsessable.

The big guns

Let's get a couple of resources out of the way that you've probably already heard of. Firstly, the biggest online retailer sometimes has some pretty special deals. Amazon.com originated the concept of online shopping, or at least perfected it, and now the world's biggest bookstore often has some great deals on technology. We check the Gold Box to see if there are any killer shopping deals for us to impulse buy.

Another oldie but goodie is Buy.com. Like Amazon, Buy.com is a one-stop-shop offering a large supply of items, and tech buyers looking for gift items on the cheap should definitely check out Buy.com's weekly deals section. We saw a few items from our cheap gifts feature on the list, like a 5.6-inch picture frame for $27 plus free shipping.

The nerd hangout

When looking to buy computer components, I've got a few specific places I check out before heading anywhere else. The first stop is Newegg. Newegg has continuously had low prices on items I've been shopping for, and they'll typically beat any big box retailer around. The company's ship times are extremely quick too, making them a solid source for last minute shopping.

Newegg is great for anything electronic, but when I'm looking to anything specifically related to computers, I give Pricewatch a check. Pricewatch has an extremely simple interface that points a user toward items, typically of the nerdy nature. The company's roots are in computer hardware and components, but the company has started to branch out into other retail areas like fashion and home decor. We'll stick to Pricewatch for the cheapest RAM, and leave our handbag selection to BagBorrowOrSteal (Netflix for handbags).

Lastly, Woot, the original deal-a-day site for nerds is still running strong. Woot lists one item on its site for 24 hours, starting at midnight central time. Typically Woot sells overstocked geeky items at extremely competitive prices. For instance, a few days ago I saw a 500GB hard drive listed at $50. Woot has three other variants in addition to the main site: Wine.Woot, Shirt.Woot and Sellout.woot, which is in association with Yahoo!. Many of my family members ended up with Woot Christmas presents, including a Roomba robotic vacuum cleaner and a touchscreen universal remote control.

Also of note

Two other sites worth checking out: DealNews is a blog / price search engine combo. With the slogan "Every day is Black Friday," the site rounds up all the best deals around the web according to "hotness" of the deal. Expect to find killer deals on laptops, monitors and other consumer electronics. The site also has links to online coupons, and lists Black Friday prices in one location.

Lastly, once you've got all your gadgety equipment and need to hook it all up, we've been extremely impressed with Monoprice for cables. Do yourself a favor: Skip the big box retailer prices on cables, and instead head online. Monoprice's deals on cables are excellent, and the quality of the merchandise is well above that of most big box retailer store brand cables.

Did we miss your favorite site? Have you had any positive or negative experiences with any of these sites? Make sure you let everyone know in the comments. Happy holidays, and happy gift shopping!

I find Amazon to be excellent with electronics. Where else would you find a sale price on new iPods? They also have super fast delivery most times, even the free shipping.

I love Woot. I waste so much money on it, largely due to their shipping rates. At five dollars flat, I often order three of something cheap, just to bring the per-item cost down to a hard-to-pass-up level.

I saw those 500GB SATA HDDs for $50 each, too. I couldn't help but pick up two of them. The 750GB drive I got off Woot in August is already down to 230GB free, so I needed to stock up, and these are even cheaper per-GB.

Similar to woot, I use uwantsavings.com for more of the non-electronic daily deals. Everything here is 10-20% less than Amazon or Overstock.
