You don't have infinite space in your living room — no one does — so you want your television to take up as little space as possible. But then again, you want a big screen, right? This used to be a conundrum, but this year at the Consumer Electronics Show it's clearer than ever that you can have both if you've got a lot of cash. When we visited Samsung's booth at the Consumer Electronics Expo, the company was tight-lipped about the exact specifications of the its prototype line of HDTVs, Luxia, and it wouldn't let us take pictures. We can tell you the sets were extremely thin, though.
The highest-end had a 240 Hz refresh rate, and the Samsung representative we spoke with claimed they all used edge-lit LED technology. While in LCDs and backlit LEDs (the LEDs already on the market) the light comes from behind the screen, the edge-lit models shine from, yes, the edges. That leads more precise colors, deeper dark areas, brighter light areas, as much as 40% less energy consumption (says Samsung), and of course less equipment in the back thickening the TV up.
These are quite a ways from your home; Samsung wouldn't even give us a ballpark estimate for when they might become available for sale. And we don't have any pricing information yet, either. Or technical specifications. But we're impressed, and we're pretty sure you would be too!
