Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FZ18 is built around its 18x wide-angle (focal length: 6 mm - 82.8 mm) lens, and includes a list of image optimization features to make the best use of it without driving up the price point and size into the realm of high-end DSLRs. Resolution maxes at 8.1 megapixels, which is mid-range for digital camera offerings. The optimization features emphasize automation to select the best modes based on the image. Intelligent Auto selects the best of 14 shooting modes, while six autofocus options (Face, 1-point, 1-point high speed, 3-point high speed, Multi-point, and Spot) are intended to enable the camera to produce sharply focused images on the fly. Intelligent ISO detects incoming light to adjust for the best exposure up to the user's cap. To accommodate the 18x zoom, image stabilization reduces camera shake-induced blur.
Despite all the optimization options, the camera can still store images in raw and raw-plus-JPEG modes to allow the user the greatest flexibility of manual editing. This model includes 27 MB of flash memory as well as room for MicroSD cards. It also includes an electronic viewfinder and 207,000 pixelLCD screen. A/V and USB cables round out connectivity options.
