    Best Buy is installing product vending machines in a dozen U.S. airports by September 1. The company has partnered with ZoomSystems to set up "Best Buy Express" automated stores that will feature MP3 players, digital cameras, unlocked cell phones, headphones, portable game players, and other products for purchase. The machines will initially be placed in airports in cities including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and San Francisco, with more to follow.

    Effective August 16, air travelers carrying notebooks in Transportation Security Administration (TSA)-approved "checkpoint friendly" travel bags will be able to pass through security without having to place their machines in a separate bin for inspection. The rules specify that these bags have a designated laptop-only section that unfolds to lie flat on an X-ray machine belt and contains no metal snaps, zippers, buckles, or pockets.

    Boston Acoustics has introduced its i-DS2 iPod speaker system. Priced at $179.99 and available in black or white with a variety of grille colors, the i-DS2 includes a USB connector for iPod communication with iTunes, a composite video output for video-capable iPods, an auxiliary input for connecting additional media players, and dual 3-1/2-inch full-range speakers featuring 15 watts RMS/30 watts dynamic output power per channel.

    Seiko Epson has designed a 3D display for mobile phones that can be viewed without 3D glasses. The technology was created by meshing lenticular lenses and a 2.5-inch LCD screen to create an effect that will produce 3D images at a 1024 X 768 resolution. The company plans to commercialize the technology within two years.

    MSI has announced its new line of EX310 multimedia notebooks. Powered by a AMD Turion X2 dual-core mobile processor and weighing just over four pounds, the 13.3-inch machine features a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450 graphics card, 1280 X 800 resolution, HDMI output, Dolby Surround Sound, a DVD burner/Blu-Ray player, up to 4GB of RAM and 320GB of hard drive storage, and an optional integrated DTV receiver that allows users to watch and record TV programs. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.

    Sirius XM CEO Mel Karmazin said recently that interoperable (dual-mode) satellite radios that will allow subscribers to hear the full lineup from both services will hit the market early next year. In the meantime, the company will unveil an a la carte radio this fall that will feature select Sirius and XM programming. For an extra $4 a month, existing subscribers can choose from a "best of" package, although the company hasn't yet revealed what programming will be made available. Karmazin added that dual-mode radios for cars will not be ready for another three years.

    Sony's new RHT-G500 Bravia theater system television stand promises surround sound while hidden in a TV stand. Designed for use with TV sets ranging from 32 to 40 inches, the rack sports a 3:1 channel sound system, with speakers embedded in the center, left, and right of the stand, along with a subwoofer. In addition to supporting a variety of TVs, the RHT-G500 includes a digital media port with modular adpators that allow users to stream music from WiFi networks, Bluetooth devices, and portable music players. Pricing and availability has not yet been announced.

    Hughes Network Systems is launching its ElitePremium satellite Internet access plan later this month , which, with alleged downstream speeds up to 5Mbps, promises to be the fastest service of its kind. Pricing for the package-- which utilizes the SPACEWAY 3 satellite -- has not yet been announced, although the company's previous highest-tier service plan ranges from $190 to $210 per month.

    Coca-Cola is partnering with Chinese media agency Pioco to broadcast downloadable video content from outdoor hotspots in Beijing and Shanghai to Bluetooth-enabled devices during the 2008 Summer Olympics. The network covers major business, shopping, and transportation centers in both cities.
