Asus is updating its gaming notebook line by refreshing the G71 with an Intel Quad 2 Extreme-powered CPU instead of the previously installed Core 2 Duo CPU. The updated Asus G71 aims to up the gaming laptop ante through a 17-inch LCD and a NVIDA GeForce 9700M GT 512MB graphics card, along with up to 4GB of DDR3 1066MHz system memory paired with the QX9300 Intel Quad 2 Extreme CPU. The G71 also comes with Asus’s proprietary Eee Stick that translates hand movement into onscreen controls in a Wii Remote-type fashion. Asus has yet to announce pricing or availability of the updated G71, but this CPU-bump might signal that the next wave of gaming notebooks powered by multi-core processors are coming.

Apple has allegedly exceeded the lofty goal of 10,000,000 iPhone's sold in 2008, according to Mac Observer. The report tracks every iPhone's 15-digit individual IMEI -- or International Mobile Equipment Identity – which contains a series of numbers that relate to production levels and was then deduced down to find the approximate number of sales. Many Wall Street analysts felt that Apple’s iPhone sales would fall short of this goal by years end, but the goal has apparently already been meet and the holiday spending spree has yet to start. The official Apple announcement will no doubt come during Steve Jobs' annual Macword keynote where he addresses shareholders and media alike.

The new Harmony 510 joins the rest of Logitech’s stable of universal remotes that aim to consolidate remotes, but this one achieves it with the lowest starting price yet. Just like other Harmony products, owners program this remote on a computer where they can customize up-to five different audio/video components interact via an infrared signal and thus eliminating multiple remotes. The Harmony 510 borrows most of its style cues from previous versions, while slightly reworking the button placement and adding four color-labeled universal buttons on the bottom row. Most notable though, the Harmony 510 remote launches with the lowest MSRP of any Harmony remote to date at $99.99, but a little searching online will reveal retailers selling it for even less.

The latest firmware update for the Samsung Instinct should resolve many of the criticisms of the handset thanks to a completely revamped Internet browser. The new browser allegedly runs ten times faster than the previous sluggish version, especially during web page rendering and UI movement. The progressive update started rolling out on September 24, 2008, which should automatically download via the Sprint Network, and install itself on the handset. In all, the update should provide a more snappy and enjoyable Internet browsing experience.

  • Sanyo developing a new, powerful Blu-ray laser

A new, high-powered laser diode from Sanyo could bring faster Blu-ray burners and 100GB discs to the market.

Sanyo has developed a powerful blue-violet laser diode that should produce Blu-ray advancements. The 450-milliwatt laser emits a beam twice as powerful as Sanyo's previous generation which means it write data at a quicker speed and can reach deeper data layers within an optical disc. With more layers, comes higher data storage capacities and so in practice, this setup can record a 100GB Blu-ray disc in just 10 minutes. Don't expect to see 12x Blu-ray burners or 100GB disc on the shelves before this year's holiday season though as the development cycle as just started for the new system meaning it's still two or three years away from mass production
