Figure 1: The Zgrip iPhone Jr. in action
If you've ever held your iPhone 3GS shaking slightly in landscape mode in your two hands and had your finger suddenly cover the lens or you've ever been extremely keen on amateur to prosumer level video production, you've probably thought, "I wish I had a tripod for my iPhone 3GS right now." Zacuto has created the Zgrip iPhone Jr., priced at $69, as a handgrip system to help you more easily balance the video you're shooting with your iPhone 3GS with only one hand. Zacuto sent us a demo unit for review, and we've spent the last several days determining if the Zgrip Jr. is worth your $69.

Apple's previously rumored special event has just become official as Apple has announced a September 9th "rock and roll" event. Although no details of the event have been confirmed, most people expect Apple to announce updates to the line of iPods, including integrated cameras in most, if not all, models. Some also expect the long-fabled iTablet, tablet Macintosh computer with anywhere from a 7-inch to a 15-inch screen, to be announced. Previous rumors of a new digital album format could also come into play.

Yelp iPhone app update brings augmented reality feature as an easter egg
Download Yelp's newest update on your iPhone 3GS, launch it, and shake your phone 3 times to activate new "Monocle" feature.

Figures 1, 2, & 3: Augmented reality comes to Yelp via Yelp Monocle
Scoble first posted about this little hidden feature on FriendFeed a little while ago. Download Yelp for iPhone (free; direct iTunes link) or if you already have the app, simply make sure you have updated it to the newest version, which was released yesterday. Then launch the app and shake your iPhone 3GS three times (note: this only works on the iPhone 3GS). After it is activated you will get a little notification of activation as in Figure 1 above prompting you to look for the Monocle button in the upper right corner. Once you click on the button another notice comes up as in Figure 2 above, telling you how to reset your compass should it be in need of re-calibration. In Figure 3, you can see all the nearby locations that popped up on my iPhone 3GS when I turned towards them in my apartment. Pretty cool bit of augmented reality goodness. Thanks, Yelp!

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard reviews roll in; WSJ's Mossberg recommends breaking the EULA
Personal Technology: http://bit.ly/2nEBAo
Computing | by C.K. Sample III | Thu Aug 27, 2009 9:35AM | 0 comments
The multitude of reviews of Apple's latest operating system upgrade, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard which is due to be released tomorrow, began rolling in last night with the arrival of Walt Mossberg's review, but Gizmodo rightly points out that Mossberg is steering his reader's towards activities of questionable legality by providing them with a seemingly innocent tip in the midst of his review:"And, for owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a “boxed set” that includes other software and costs $169. The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here’s a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140."
Of course, just because the $29 version of Snow Leopard will work doesn't mean it's necessarily legal to buy and use. As with all software, you are buying a license to use the software rather than the software itself, and according to the EULA (End User License Agreement) license, people who are upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard don't have the right to use the $29 upgrade version.
Overall, the vast majority of the reviews are positive, but they're all available below should you want to read through them all. Just be aware that some applications won't work nicely with the new OS, while others like Adobe's CS3 will still function, but won't be supported by Adobe.
