Skype founders keep 14% of company, LinkedIn gets a redesign, Boxee beta to be available December 7
Computing, Home A/V | by Samuel Axon | Fri Nov 6, 2009 6:30PM | 0 comments

Skype's founders and eBay have come to an agreement on the terms of the sale of Skype to private investors. The founders will retain 14% of the company, not 10% as originally stated. Soon Skype will no longer be the property of eBay; that was a short-lived and fruitless arrangement if we've ever seen one.
Professional social networking site LinkedIn has received a user interface overhaul. The most notable change is the addition of a top navigation bar, but several smaller adjustments have been made too.
The beta version of the Boxee streaming web video software will finally launch on December 7th, and it won't just be the alpha version with a few bug fixes. Boxee's founder has promised a new user interface and better search features in the new version.

Computing, Mobile, Gaming, Home A/V | by Samuel Axon | Thu Nov 5, 2009 5:30PM | 0 comments

Google just launched a new site called Google Dashboard. It puts all the basic information about your usage of various Google apps like Gmail and Docs in one place, and you can jump from there into any app.
T-Mobile has started rolling out its HSPA 7.2 Mbps 3G cellular data network. It's twice as fast as the previous infrastructure. Only some areas have gotten the upgrade so far, but Android and Me reports that New Jersey, Chicago, Minnesota, Virginia, Arizon, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Michigan, and New York are among them.

Apple App Store now carries 100,000 apps, Google Friend Connect adds personalization features, Verizon to up early termination fee to $350 on "advanced devices"
Mobile, Computing | by Samuel Axon | Wed Nov 4, 2009 6:48PM | 0 comments
Google Friend Connect has received new customization features and tools designed to help visitors to websites find out what they have in common. When users sign up for a new website through Friend Connect, they're asked questions chosen by the webmaster about their interests, and their responses are displayed on their public profiles as instant icebreakers.
Verizon is changing its early termination fee policy; on some "advanced devices" (presumably expensive smartphones) the contract termination fee will bump up to $350 to further discourage customers from dropping out for new services or phones.

Apple pitches $30 per month iTunes TV program to studios, Snow Leopard 10.6.2 kills hackintosh Atom netbooks, Sprint WiMAX goes live in Chicago, Dallas, and eight North Carolina cities
Computing, Home A/V, Mobile | by Samuel Axon | Mon Nov 2, 2009 5:25PM | 0 comments
Apple is reportedly trying to get content producers (TV studios and the like) to agree to a plan by which Apple would offer an on-demand array of TV shows via its iTunes service to compete with cable. The plan would cost $30 month, significantly less than what you probably pay for cable or satellite. So far no headway has been made, though. The upcoming 10.6.2 update to the Apple Mac OS Snow Leopard operating system torpedoes support for Intel Atom processors, presenting new challenges to the small but passionate community of hackintosh netbook owners.
Sprint today launched its WiMAX 4G network in Chicago, Dallas, and eight North Carolina cities: Charlotte, Durham, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Chapel Hill, Cary, Greensboro, and High Point. The data plan costs $69.99 per month. Sprint has also begun selling the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 in Baltimore for $199.99.

Google Voice has 1.4 million users, Apple execs hint tablet might be for video, Bing mobile launches
Mobile, Computing | by Samuel Axon | Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:20PM | 1 comment
Google handed over Google Voice usage data when it was requested by regulators. It turns out the young service already has around 1.4 million users, and Google plans to expand the service to foreign markets at some point in the future.A Canadian analyst took notes on a meeting with Apple executives. The executives talked down the importance of eReaders and talked up the company's coming attention to video content, potentially implying that the upcoming Apple tablet will be for video and not magazines and news. There's a lot of evidence to the contrary, though.
A cell phone browser-optimized version of Microsoft's Bing search engine is now online at m.bing.com. It offers simplified and uglified versions of many of the same features you'll get from the regular Bing. There's also a new version of of the search engine for touchscreen devices.

Computing, Mobile | by Samuel Axon | Wed Oct 28, 2009 8:00PM | 0 comments
Google has announced the features of its Google Maps service for Android 2.0 cell phones. 3D views and turn-by-turn directions are both in the cards. It looks to be a marked improvement over the old Android Google Maps functionality.Google also officially unveiled its Music Search feature for the web, which uses data from partners Lala and MySpace's iLike. With it you can search for songs and play them to verify that they're the ones you're looking for thanks to integration with Pandora, imeem, and Rhapsody.
The United Kingdom is launching a new wing of its government to combat piracy and copyright infringement, and one of the top officials has said that people caught repeatedly downloading illegal content will be forcibly disconnected from the internet.

Apple rumored to be pitching tablet to Australian media, Android 2.0 features now available to app developers, Google Wave to get an app store
Computing, Mobile | by Samuel Axon | Tue Oct 27, 2009 6:30PM | 1 comment
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Apple has been sending inquiries to Australian media companies asking if they'd consider distributing their content on the device, adding to the mountain of evidence for the worst-kept secret in the consumer electronics industry.Google Android 2.0 will add built-in Exchange and Facebook support along with many other improvements to Android phones. Developers now have a chance to implement the cool new stuff in their apps; the Google Android SDK has been updated with support for 2.0 features.
Google Wave will get its own app store, according to a Next Web writer who attended a Google meeting. Like the Apple App Store and the Android Market, the Google Wave app store will let developers create applications for the service and sell them for profit.

Google Voice: Now with your existing phone number and mobile voicemail
Mobile, Computing | by Samuel Axon | Tue Oct 27, 2009 4:25PM | 0 comments
Google just announced two significant improvements to its Voice service. First, you can now choose to use your own phone number. Not all of the features will work if you do this instead of using a new Google number; for example, call recording and conference calling, but options are always appreciated. The other new feature lets you move your cell phone voicemail service over to Google's servers, so you can take advantage of the Google Voice features instead of the more limited options offered by your carrier.

New York Times editor Bill Keller says Apple tablet is "impending," Sony PlayStation 3 gets Netflix streaming, Facebook Share adds counter and other new features
Computing, Gaming, Home A/V, Mobile | by Samuel Axon | Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:35PM | 0 comments
Bill Keller is the Executive Editor of The New York Times, so he ought to have some inside information about what the company is up to. And when speaking to an audience of fellow insiders, he named "the impending Apple slate" as one of the devices The New York Times plans to bring its digital content to.Streaming movies and TV episodes from Netflix have been a source of bragging rights for Xbox 360 advocates, but Microsoft's exclusivity deal seems to have ended, as Netflix and Sony just announced that within a few weeks the PlayStation 3 will offer Watch Instantly content as well.
Facebook has revamped its "Share" feature, which folks with websites use to embed a button that helps readers share content with their Facebook friends. Like competing services, Facebook Share now shows a total share count so you can see how popular an item is on Facebook, along with a few back-end improvements.
