Arriving in fall 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic comes late to the party of media-savvy touchscreen smartphones, following on the heels of Apple's iPhone, LG's Dare, and Samsung's Instinct. As expected, the prominent design feature is the 3.2-inch touchscreen, which functions with either a stylus or a finger, and navigates the S60 5th Edition (Symbian 9.4) mobile operating system.
Nokia is marketing the device in the same vein as other high-end touchscreen phones, with specs to match. The phone's camera produces 3.2 megapixel (2048 x 1535 pixels) pictures, higher than the iPhones two-megapixel camera, and also adds some optimization and editing options, like white balance adjustment and red-eye reduction. Connectivity wise, the 5800 features WiFi and 3G capability, and also sports a built-in web browser to take advantage of the high-speed options. An accelerometer detects when the handset is tilted on its side to automatically switch the screen orientation or bring up a qwerty keyboard with tactile feedback. Nokia's Maps service works with the phone's GPS to locate the user and provide turn-by-turn directions.
Uniquely, the phone's available stylus is accompanied by a guitar pick (plectrum), which performs the same sort of precision pointing.
