Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

In an industry full of copycats, gadget-makers are always trying to come up with some "first" milestone as a selling point for their products. LG is stretching a bit by putting modifiers on its pitch of the GD510: it's not the most compact phone. It's not the most compact touchscreen phone, even, but it's the most compact 3-inch touchscreen phone.

Apart from that bit, the GD510 is a bit of a hard sell. It lacks 3G internet, instead settling for EDGE/GRPS. The phone is intended to be minimalistic; LG argues that many users are turned off by the complexity of other touchscreen smartphones. We're not sure we buy it, but here's what you do get: a 3-megapixel camera, 8 GB of storage, a WVGA display, and of course the ability to play music and video files.

Look for this one to go on sale in the United States and Europe sometime in October. Pricing hasn't been announced yet.
