The iPhone 3G is the first followup to arguably one of the most buzzed about products of all-time, the original iPhone. Released on July 11, 2008, the iPhone 3G fills in some gaps left open by the original iPhone, including eliminating the needlessly recessed headphone / headset jack in favor of a flush-mounted jack. Critics of the original iPhone's sluggish data performance will take note of the iPhone 3G's much-improved data connection speeds through UMTS and HSDPA compatibility.
New to the line is the addition of a GPS receiver, allowing the device's built-in Google Maps application more accurate positioning data, a 16 GB version available in black or white (the 8 GB version is only available in black) and a plastic-backed enclosure.
On July 19th, 2009, the iPhone 3GS was released by Apple, replacing the iPhone 3G as Apple's top of the line iPhone, however, the 8 GB iPhone 3G remained available for a reduced price of only $99.
Both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G are available exclusively on AT&T in the United States. They have been exclusive to O2 in the United Kingdom, but Orange UK has announced that it will become the first competing network to also carry the iPhone. The Orange release will occur sometime before the end of the year. Vodafone has also announced plans to offer the 3G and the 3GS in the UK and Ireland, but it won't launch the devices on its network until early 2010.
Rogers had iPhone exclusivity in Canada, but Apple has announced that Bell will sell the iPhone there too starting in November. A few days after the Bell news, Telus announced that it would carry the iPhone as well. Point is, exclusivity deals are falling down all over the place. No word on when that might happen in the U.S — yet.

The 3G is all they say and MORE!...It has it all. Truly a joy to have and use.

The iPhone's accessories can do almost anything, and one of them can keep you from needing a payday loan for bail money. The newest accessory is the iBreath, a portable breathalyzer, the next wonder device from the people who brought us the trailblazing iPod. The device also doubles as an FM transmitter. Hollywood's high profile partiers are reportedly jumping at the chance and buying them up so that they don't end up the next celebrity mug shot, especially after so many high profile busts for DUI. The iPhone has been one of the hottest items over the last year, and people have been flocking to buy them and accessories. Having a portable device to keep from getting payday loans to pay for a lawyer is a definite blessing. To read more about iBreath and payday loans for financial emergencies, check out this article.

Can anyone please recommend the best way to hook up the iPhone to my 2003 Honda Civic's speakers, or to a stand-alone speaker? [I hope it's okay to ask a question here.]

The best way would be if your stereo reciever has some sort of aux-in, and then plug an 1/8" cable from the iPod to the stereo.

Thanks, Randall, but I should have mentioned that I do NOT have aux-in.

I'd then say give a shot to the radio transmitter. I've had mixed success with these units. Typically, find one that's powered by the cigarette lighter rather than a double a battery. It's not going to be the best results, especially since you have to find an open frequency which can be tough, but it's about your only option.

A radio transmitter powered by the lighter? Hmm.
What about a speaker like this?

iPhone doesn't support A2DP, so it's a nogo.

As in, the sound quality will be more poor than it should be. That works as a speaker phone, not as a music player. If you're OK with poor quality sound, then you might be happy, but I'm not into bad quality sound.

I'm definitely not into bad-quality sound and of course (being a total non-techie) had and have no idea what A2DP is, so now what, please? Can I find a lighter-operated radio transmitter at, say, Radio Shack? Or is this, from the Apple Store, what you mean? http://store.apple.com/us/product/TU372LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mw&mco=MjQ0MDQ3Nw
(Thanks for taking time to help me with this.)

If you have a tape deck in the car get a cheap cassette adapter like one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/CASSETTE-TAPE-DECK-ADAPTER-ADAPTOR/...
It will be higher quality sound than via an FM transmitter. Good luck!

Thanks, Barb, but I do not have a cassette deck. I asked Honda, and they don't sell conversion transmitter kits, but they referred me to Best Buy, which installs them but doesn't sell them, and they referred me to icarkits.com, which sells units for $135 or $180 and then BB would install it for about $60. I'm not sure I want to spend all that much, specially since I'm about to get my first laptop (just the white MacBook) so for now I'll just make sure my earphones stay put and listen that way. The other alternative, of course, is to buy a new car. :-)
