Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Product Details

Announced at WWDC 2009, the Apple iPhone 3GS looks the same as 2008's iPhone 3G cell phone, and it does all the same things to start with, but thanks to information leaked by T-Mobile in Europe, we know that in addition to the widely publicized 3.0 Megapixel camera capable of capturing both pictures and video, the iPhone 3GS runs on 256MBs of RAM (which is double the RAM found in the iPhone 3G) and a 600MHz processor (the iPhone 3G features a 412MHz processor). Faster system specs mean the 3G S averages twice as fast when loading applications, performing tasks, and rendering games. The iPhone 3GS does 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA where your carrier supports those speeds, and gets between 20 and 30% better battery life than the 3G depending on what you're doing with it.

This better hardware enables the most notable new feature in the iPhone 3G S: video recording. Not only does the phone have a 3-megapixel still camera (better than the old one), it also records VGA-resolution videos at 30fps that can be edited right on the phone, sent via MMS on supported carriers, and uploaded to YouTube.

The other big feature of the iPhone 3G S is voice control. You can tell the 3G S to skip tracks, to name a track, or even to "play songs like this one" when using the iPod features of the phone. The 3GS also adds a digital compass, and it ships with all the features of iPhone OS 3.0.

The iPhone 3G S is available as of June 17th, 2009 in both black and white at $199 with 16 gigabytes of storage and $299 with 32 GB.

Both the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 3G are available exclusively on AT&T in the United States. They have been exclusive to O2 in the United Kingdom, but Orange UK has announced that it will become the first competing network to also carry the iPhone. The Orange release will occur sometime before the end of the year. Vodafone has also announced plans to offer the 3G and the 3GS in the UK and Ireland, but it won't launch the devices on its network until early 2010.

Rogers had iPhone exclusivity in Canada, but Apple has announced that Bell will sell the iPhone there too starting in November. A few days after the Bell news, Telus announced that it would carry the iPhone as well. Point is, exclusivity deals are falling down all over the place. No word on when that might happen in the U.S — yet.
