Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Android Dev Phone 1 is a variant of HTC's T-Mobile G1 designed as a tool for developers of applications for Google's Android cellphone operating system. It's available for purchase directly from Google to registered Android developers in 18 countries for a price of $400 with no service plan or contract. Unlike the G1, Android Dev Phone 1 is not locked into a cellphone service provider. The phone ships without a connection to any network, and comes with a bootloader — a tool that allows the owner to customize settings and install new software or operating systems.

Aside from its unlocked state and development tools, Android Dev Phone 1 is nearly identical to the T-Mobile G1. The hardware specifications are the same, and by default it uses the same software -- Google Android 1.0. This phone is intended solely for software development professionals, but if you're a particularly tech-savvy consumer you might buy it with a mind to use it on a cellphone network other than T-Mobile, in which the G1 is locked. However, the lack of customer support for the device and a few technical obstacles make that highly impractical for all but the most technically skilled gadget lovers.
